The Nebraska Bowhunters Association (NBA) is one the State's premier hunting organizations and works hard to promote and protect bowhunting in the great state of Nebraska. Early in the year 1984, an idea of an organization that would bring bowhunters together with a common goal to preserve and protect the sport of bowhunting was formed. After frequent correspondence, the first meeting was held on May 6, 1984. Members present were Lyle Prell, Marion Schultz, Gerald Beck, Eldon Epley, Mac Forbis, Mike Bell, and Perry McDaniels. At the gathering, ideas and goals were presented and the Nebraska Bowhunters Association was born. The articles of incorporation were filed with the state of Nebraska on June 30, 1984. Since those first days, the membership has grown to 1000+ members with hopes of continuous growth.
The NBA provides many things to its members including:
• A highly acclaimed newsletter:
Among many other things, the newsletter includes: Nebraska Game and Parks updates, wildlife issues, informative articles, bowhunting stories, success photos, bios on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners, and membership information.
• An annual banquet:
Among many other things, the banquet features question and answer sessions, seminars, photo contest, a trophy wall, raffles, and an awards banquet featuring some of the best bowhunter authors and television personalities in the world. Guests have included: Judd Cooney (1985), M.R. James (1989), G. Fred Asbell (1990), Glenn St. Charles (1991), Larry D. Jones (1992), Dwight Schuh (1993), Jim Doughterty (1994), Gene and Barry Wensel (1996), Dick Turpin (1997), E. Donnal Thomas (1999), Dr. Dave Samuel (2000), Monte Browning (2002), Jack Frost (2005), Jay Gregory (2007), and C.J. Winand & Chuck Adams (2009).
• An annual Summer Jamboree at Halsey National Forest:
The jamboree includes: contests, seminars, 3-D shooting, camping, and sight seeing.
• Merchandise identifying you as an NBA member.
• And, an opportunity to defend and promote bowhunting in the state of Nebraska.
Since 1984, the NBA has developed a strong organization gaining the respect of farmers, ranchers, other sportsmen, and the employees and commissioners of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Some of its accomplishments and activities include:
• Organized a very effective response to the first ever anti-hunting protest in Nebraska.
• Appearances on radio and television defending bowhunting.
• Aided in the development of a Bowhunter Education Program for the Gifford Wildlife area.
• Has donated thousands of dollars to: Bowhunter Education, Operation Game Thief, Wildlife Legislative Fund, and many others.
• Aided the Trail Tails magazine for 5th grade school children.
• Participates in the elk, antelope, and bighorn sheep studies in the state of Nebraska.
• Performed deer studies for the Game and Parks Commission.
• Promotes and participates in Bowhunter Education.
• Has delivered pro-bowhunting messages with booths and participation at the Nebraska State Fair and numerous outdoor expos/gatherings.
